About “GMO free” movement
„GMO free” movement is a social initiative that unites farmers, food producers, grocery stores, catering businesses, schools and kindergartens and other companies and institutions, which do not grow, sell or use genetically modified organisms (GMO).
What is GMO?
Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are plants or animals whose genetic material has been artificially changed by inserting genes from other plants, bacteria, viruses and animals. Such transgenic mix do not occur naturally or using traditional breeding methods.
Genetically modified food (GM food) is a food, that contains or is produced from genetically modified organisms (GMO).
We firmly believe that everybody has a right to choose whether to consume genetically modified products or not, taking into account negative effects of GMOs on the environment and deficient research on long-term impact on human health. According to sociological polling, the vast majority of Latvian society is against growing genetically modified plants and using GMOs in food production.
Our goals are:
- to develop for consumers a recognisable and trustful “GMO free” choice for shopping and eating;
- to promote development and accessibility of “GMO free” products and services.
“GMO free” movement partners
The movement is initiated by “Friends of the Earth” in Latvia, Ministry of Environment, Association of Biological Agriculture and Association of Hotels and Restaurants.

Members of the movement can be recognised by the sticker on the entrance door, which means that there does not sell or use labelled genetically modified products.
